The exploitation of the living marine resources should take into account the effects on marine ecosystems. It consequently includes direct and indirect impacts of fishing activities on marine communities of non-market value for the fishing industry. Protecting the marine species victims of by-catch such as sea mammals is essential as it could be a serious threat for endangered species -See COM (1999) 363 final. ABSTRACT: The Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) is a small odontocete distributed from Santa Catarina state, Brazil, to Honduras. Although it is currently considered “near threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, considerable knowledge on health and disease aspects of this species has been gained over the last decade. The main threats for the species are represented by multiple anthropic factors. Guiana dolphins feed on a variety of taxa, primarily teleosts, crustaceans, and cephalopods. Acoustic deterrent devices could be an appealing solution to tackle accidental cetacean by-catches in pelagic trawls or in fishing net gears. The bibliographical data on two species (Harbour porpoise and bottlenosed dolphin) have been analyzed in terms of audiogram, discomfort noise level that could lead to behavioural changes, sensory fatigue, and threshold for permanent hearing injuries. It is possible, on the basis of the above data, to characterize an efficient annoyance sound threshold which is not harmful to the species to be protected. Modeling Distribution and Abundance of Antarctic Baleen Whales Using Ships of Opportunity Ecology and Society

Information on animal abundance and distribution is at the cornerstone of many wildlife and conservation strategies. However, these data can be difficult and costly to obtain for cetacean species. The expense of sufficient ship time to conduct design-unbiased line transect surveys may be simply out of reach for researchers in many countries, which nonetheless grapple with problems of conservation of endangered species, by-catch of small cetaceans in commercial fisheries, and progression toward ecosystem-based fisheries management. Recently developed spatial modeling techniques show promise for estimating wildlife abundance using non-randomized surveys, but have yet to receive much field-testing in areas where designed surveys have also been conducted....

The present study provides information about the diet of sympatric populations of small cetaceans in the Babitonga Bay estuary. This is the first study on the diet of these species in direct sympatry. The stomach contents of seven Guiana dolphins Sotalia guianensis and eight franciscanas Pontoporia blainvillei were analyzed. The prey of both cetaceans was mostly teleost fishes, followed by cephalopods. We identified 13 teleost fishes as part of the diet of the franciscanas, and 20 as part of the diet of Guiana dolphins. Lolliguncula brevis was the only cephalopod recorded, and was the most important prey for both cetaceans. The social structure of humpback whales in their tropical wintering grounds is very fluid. To date, no information has been published for cases in which two whales were both satellite-tagged while in association. Here, we report the movements of four humpback whale pairs tagged together off the coast of Brazil. Fieldwork and satellite tagging of humpback whales was conducted between 2003 and 2008 along the eastern coast of Brazil, between 20°S and 8°S. Movement was monitored while whales were still in their breeding ground.
